Kemano T2

Redpath's drilling and blasting expertise was deployed at the T2 tunnel project, ensuring a reliable supply of hydroelectric power to Rio Tinto's aluminum smelter in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada.

The Kemano T2 Project involved excavating a new 7.6 km portion of tunnel and refurbishing an existing 8.4 km portion of a second tunnel to complete a 16 km long tunnel to the existing penstocks.

Redpath's involvement focused on the section of tunnel that was excavated by TBM (tunnel boring machine) in the late 80's and early 90's. T2 offered an opportunity to use Redpath's underground mining methodologies in a civil infrastructure project.

The scope of work consisted of drilling and installing additional ground support, drilling drain holes, pouring concrete in transition areas and spraying shotcrete in designated locations through the downstream section of the tunnel.

The avalanche-prone Kemano region is only accessible by air or water, and Redpath's experience from harsh climates and remote locations was conducive to the success of the project.

Redpath's involvement in the project concluded in July 2022.
